These databases contain the data published in the eight volumes of the Cancer Incidence in Five Continents (CI5) series. The Internet application has limited tabulation and graphic facilities. The complete facilities such as grouping of cancer sites and populations, are available using the CI5 I-VIII software on CD-ROM.

The Cancer Incidence in Five Continents series of monographs, published every five years, has become the reference source of data on the international incidence of cancer.
The aim of the Cancer Incidence in Five Continents series was clearly set out in the introduction to the first volume, published in 1966 (Doll et al.). The authors drew attention to the great rewards in understanding disease aetiology to be derived from the study of disease frequency in different communities, in different areas, and over time. Mentioning the available sources of data for this type of study (mortality rates, and proportional frequencies of cancers from clinical or pathological series), they concluded that: "the most valuable data are, undoubtedly, the rates obtained by recording the occurrence of every case of cancer over a specified period".
