The issue of confidentiality has threatened cancer registration in two countries in recent months. The IACR intervened (successfully) on both occasions, but these problems stimulated the Association to join in with the European Network of Cancer Registries’ initiative to prepare new guidelines. A European Working Group is preparing a guide for Europe, and when their work is complete it is planned to extend the Working Group and to produce a guide for use internationally. I remind you that in the meantime the ‘Guidelines on Confidentiality in the Cancer Registry’ produced by IARC/IACR in 1992 are still helpful, and can be obtained from the IACR Secretariat.
Members of the Association continue to collaborate with the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) in the production of technical reports on a wide range of topics of concern to cancer registries, and in collaborative projects on cancer incidence. Many of you sent careful and considered replies to the questionnaire sent out in 1998 asking for terms used by local pathologists which are not currently in ICD-O. For the latest news, see ICD-O-3 (under Projects and Publications).
A reminder - your membership fees are used to support participation in the annual scientific meeting. The funds are used for members from the developing countries. In an effort to give support to as many people as possible, most of the budget is used each year for members from the geographical area in which the meeting is being held - for Latin Americans in the Atlanta meeting last year, Eastern Europeans for Lisbon - and next year the spotlight will be on Asia. If you want to come to Thailand next year and think you may be eligible for support don’t hesitate to ask (the Secretariat or your Regional Representative).
