Cancer Incidence in Five Continents, volume IX
Joint IARC/IACR publication
Status report

The Editorial Board of CI5 has met on four occasions, and most recently at IARC in Lyon between the 16th and 19th of January 2007. For this meeting IARC had processed datasets for 198 populations (in addition to the 87 processed and discussed at the previous meeting in October 2006), which were available for review by the Editorial Board, representing submissions from registries in all continents.

Evaluation criteria were based on data quality as measured by percentage of cases found by death certificate only (% DCO), percentage of cases with unknown and ill-defined site (% Unk), microscopically verified (% MV) and unknown basis of diagnosis (% UB), availability of mortality data and calculated ratios of cancer site specific mortality to incidence rates (M/I), unexplained irregularities in case counts by diagnosis year, external information on completeness of incidence coverage and information provided in the questionnaire. Registries included in volume IX will be assigned to one of three categories based on data quality.

The resultant decisions and questions from the Editorial Board meetings have been sent to each of the reviewed registries simultaneously via email. Based on the responses to the issues raised, the Editors will review these data again between the 24th and 26th of April 2007. At that point a final decision will be made regarding inclusion into the volume.

The data tables and narrative summary for the registry will be this time released on the Internet. This electronic publication will coincide with the IACR Annual Meeting in Slovenia (18-20 September 2007). Format for the web-based tables will be similar to presentations in recent CI5 publications. The publication of the summary printed volume will follow. It will provide highlights and selected results from the Internet report to feature information from the highest quality registries representing populations world-wide that illustrate the importance of registries for cancer control and descriptive epidemiology.

Currently, data from other 98 registries are still to be received and reviewed. These 98 registries are mainly new registries or registries with a delayed submission. To assure that the submitted data are processed in time for inclusion in volume IX (9), the registries should comply with suggested deadlines for submission and correction of their datasets.

The Editors nominated to represent IACR on the Editorial Board of CI5-IX are Dr Brenda Edwards and Dr Hai Rhim Shin. IARC nominates additional Editors.
